The word “massage therapy” refers to various approaches (see box for examples). The muscles and other soft tissues of the body are pressed, rubbed, and otherwise manipulated by therapists. They utilise their hands and fingers the most, although they may also use their forearms, elbows, and feet.

A Few Examples of Massage Therapy Types

Long strokes, kneading, deep circular motions, vibrating, and tapping are all used in Swedish massage. Sports massage is comparable to Swedish massage, but it is tailored to athletes’ demands. Two further examples are deep tissue massage and trigger point massage, which focuses on myofascial trigger points, which are unpleasant when touched and can induce problems elsewhere in the body.

What exactly do massage therapists perform when it comes to patient care?

Massage therapists operate in several venues, such as private offices, hospitals, nursing homes, studios, and sports and fitness centres. Some also go to the patients’ homes or places of business, and they typically aim to create a relaxing atmosphere.

New patients are generally asked about their symptoms, medical history, and intended outcomes by therapists. They may also use touch to assess uncomfortable or tight regions and decide the appropriate amount of pressure to administer.

The patient usually rests on a table, naked or in loose-fitting clothes (covered with a sheet, except for the area being massaged). The therapist may apply oil or lotion to alleviate friction on the skin. Massage treatment is sometimes given to clients while seated on a chair. A massage session might be short, but it can also take an hour or more.
